Going Up to Mammoth

Today my dad and I drove up from LA to Mammoth. As always, we left around an hour and a half later than we wanted to leave, but we figured that wouldn’t be a big deal.

Wrong.

First off, we missed being in an accident by a few hundred yards that stopped traffic entirely on the 14 for half an hour.

From then until Bishop, all was well. I drove the Mojave-Bishop leg, and as usual it was pretty boring. At least I had my iPod and a tape adapter.

However, once we got past Bishop it was snowing. We had four-wheel drive, so we weren’t too worried, but then it started to come down pretty hard and it became really hard to see. Fog lights helped, and we caught up to another car that we could follow, so we kept on for about 20 minutes until it stopped snowing.

We thought we were clear, but then the wind started to blow in gusts. When it blew hard, it was pretty much whiteout conditions. This got worse and worse, then calming, then starting again all the way up to Mammoth.

Finally, getting into town we went to Wave Rave and rented some equipment. After eating dinner, we had our trek to our hotel, which was pretty difficult. Of course, my dad had buried the ice scraper under the rest of our stuff, so we were relying on the defroster and the windshield wipers to be able to see. Did I mention that we nearly broadsided a snowplow?

Now, we’re here, and hopefully the weather will be nice tomorrow. The conditions should be great.
